No Matter What
Although the duo 1st and 2nd albums was very successful in Japan and Europe, those were not on sale in USA. In 1997, Thoughtscape Sounds, Arkansas based independent label finally released their efforts on this collection CD. The opener “In So Many Words” was taken from the German version 2nd album, 5 tracks from 1st album followed. And next one “No Matter What” originally performed by Badfinger was picked from the Japanese version 2nd album, followed by 4 songs appeared on both Japanese and German 2nd album. This collection was remarkable because of “After The Love Is Gone” (acoustic version) from Japanese EP and “Lovin Arms” in-store promotion live performance in Tokyo and previously unreleased song “Broken World” as the album closure. Release: 16 December, 1997 (TSS-0012) Label: Thoughtscape Sounds, USA Tracks: 1. In So Many Words 2. Land Of Dreams 3. The Night The Angels Cried 4. Lovin' Arms 5. Working Man 6. My Desire 7. King Of Hearts
There were several dialogues between Tommy Funderburk and Bruce Gaitsch to reunite the legendary duo and make another album from 2010’s and sometimes we heard that they started to write a new material together, but it was never materialised. Tommy commented that the duo wrote 19 new materials for this reunited project. After some really disappointing experiences with traditional labels, they teamed up with a crowd funding company kulaBrands, that funded their studio and production time, allowing the band to record the basic tracks for the new album in January 2019. Unfortunately Bruce Gaitsch suffered a severe stroke on 28th March 2019 during the making of this record. Fortunately reported that Bruce was healing and by intensive rehab made incredible progress of recovery. Due to the absence of Bruce, Tommy was obliged to finish the album with CJ Vanston. The final result is this. In the meantime, the limited edition digipack CD with band members signature except Bruce were sent to some of 717 project fund backers early 2020, but some could not receive their promised rewards under COVID-19 difficulties etc. Having said that, an unreleased song “I Believe In You” mp3 with advanced 10 tracks mp3 were delivered to the fund backers in July 2019 before its official release. Still Waiting
The second HEAT album titled “Still Waiting” followed in 1981 featuring Jean Marie-Arnold and Ed Whiting on vocals. Due to legal issues combined with record company politics, it was not well promoted and thus HEAT faded out from the LA music scene without delivering their third album to the public. By the reassessment of HEAT music in mid 1990’s in Japan, this 2nd album was also firstly reissued on CD (COOL 010) with the self-titled debut album by COOL SOUND in 1998. Revisited
In February of 2012, Tom Saviano decided to begin re-examining all of the original HEAT recordings. Personally I recall that I chatted with Tom and got opportunities to see its progress over Skype with him between Los Angeles where Tom lived and London I lived then. It was really fun. He meticulously reshaped the sound field on chosen songs by adding (and sometimes subtracting) musical elements within each track to give them a modern groove and feel and also improved the overall fidelity by giving the recordings a wider frequency and impact. And 5 previously unheard tracks recorded during the same 80’s period intended for HEAT releases were added to this revisited album. Furthermore, exciting new contributions from musicians and vocalists including Bill & Tamara Champlin, Vinnie Colaiuta, Michael O’Neill, Charles “Icarus” Johnson, Nathan East, Carmen Grillo, Bruce Gaitsch and more are added to breathe new life into mid 80’s original recording. Lucky Dog
We had to wait for Clif’s second solo album more than two decades, probably because he was quite busy to produce and write materials for others. When he signed with Frontiers, he mentioned as below; “After receiving numerous requests from fans all over the world, I am excited to announce that I’m teaming up with Frontiers and releasing a new solo album, Very cool to be working with Frontiers and after too long, on my own project. Years have passed since my last solo effort, but the truth is, I am, at the heart of things, a journeyman songwriter, and producer for others, and still am. But I have had an awesome time stepping out and putting together this record.“ As you see, a bonus track was added to Japanese version, but only 2.5years later now in January 2021, Japanese version seemed to be sold out and no plan for second pressing, as a result, the Japanese version with a bonus has become a collectors item already. Release: 13 July, 2018 (Japan: 4 July 2018) Label: Frontiers Music, Italy (FRCD875) [Japan: King Records (KICP-1921)] Tracks: 1. AIn’t No Way 2. Don’T Look Now 3. Unbroken 4. Like You 5. All Dressed Up
One of the legendary albums among WestCoast / AOR music lovers. David Roberts looked back on the recording sessions of the album and said "I recall entering the once famous Sunset Sound Studio in Hollywood. The musicians had their setups in place. I was totally in awe. It was really truly exciting to me. There was Jeff Pocaro, Steve Lukather, and Mike Pocaro with me at the keyboard. As you can imagine, it was also a little intimidating to be jamming your songs with some of the world's best, but these guys were professional and made me feel comfortable right away. I recall one day when I was noodling at my keyboard during a break and Jeff Pocaro, who absolutely loved to play drums all the time, enthusiastically began to play along with me. Steve Lukather and Mike Pocaro would take his lead and begin to jam on my keyboard rift. As the days progressed, I found our jams to be as much fun as actually recording the record. I have to tell you that after playing and recording with these guys, it's been really hard to lower my standards when recording with other musicians. There's a reason these guys are the best. Unfortunately Jeff Porcaro passed away several years ago ( far too soon) but I will always have the fondest memories of our time together. As an artist recording a record, there is nothing like hearing your songs come to life in such an inspired way by such wonderful musicians. These guys were so enthusiastic and also a lot of fun to hang out with. They liked to play practical jokes on each other and had real good senses of humour. I also remember shooting hoops on the studio lot every afternoon. I like to think we became fast friends because they hung out at the studio longer then they needed to be there. Talking or eating dinner, offering suggestions on how to approach the next song that was slated to be recorded. I even heard from David Leonard, the studio engineer, that one night when Toto was recording in the same room, they played David Paich our previous days work. I like to think they were proud of their contribution. It was a special moment in time not only for me but also for them. Toto was busy completing what would turn out to be their multi grammy winning record Toto IV at Record One Studio in the Valley. On a few occasions they invited me to come over to hear what they were working on, unfortunately I was burning the candle at both ends trying complete my record (12-14hrs in the studio). I wish I had gone." Release: 1982 Label: Elektra Records, Canada (XE1-60127) Tracks: 1. All In The Name Of Love 2. Too Good to Last 3. Someone Like You 4. Boys Of Autumn 5.
