Without Walls
After commercial success of his solo debut, mainly because of “Maniac”, Sembello continued to contribute to movie soundtracks. In 1984, “Gremlins...Mega Madness” for Steven Spielberg’s Ambling Production movie ‘Gremlins”, then “Gravity” for Ron Dante directed hit movie “Coccon” followed in 1985. Thus, A&M Records seemed to have high expectation for Sembello’s second solo album featuring “Gravity”. Tracks shown on the backside of the original US Vinyl was as below ( see the second photo); (Side A) 1. Dangerous 2. Last To Know 3. The Picture 4. Funkabilly Swing 5. Gravity (Side B) 1. Is This The Way To Paradise 2. Angelina 3.Wonder Where Your Are 4. Burn It Up 5. Hysterical. However, the vinyl did have different tracks on it. "Angelina" and "Hysterical" were deleted and instead "What You Really Want" was on it. Only USA cassette and Japanese CD version had "The Picture" and "Angelina", which are 2 tracks among 3 deleted tracks. (see the fourth photo). As far as I know, the later press USA vinyl was with the corrected artwork (see the third photo). Speaking about the deleted track “Hysterical”, as of January 2021, I did not know someone got the vinyl with it. However, the song was recorded by Miki Asakura, Japanese female singer on the album “Love Again” released on 5 May 1985. The song was composed by Steve Dudas with Dick Rudolph. And Miki Asakura sang Japanese lyrics version as ‘Ano Mune Ni Moichido (あの胸にもう一度)”. Michael Sembello and Danny Sembello co-wrote originall English lyrics, thus their name was not credited on Miki Asakura’s version. Lastly, another fact to clarify the reason why two different Japanese versions were released in 1986. When the album was released in April 1986, A&M Records albums were licensed to Alpha Records in Japan. Due to the ending the license contract between A&M and Alpha records, Canyon Records became new A&M business partner in Japan. Hence, in August 1986, Sembello’s “Without Wallls” was re-released in Japan. (see the fourth photo, which you might read D32Y3035 rather than 32XB77. This one is not Alpha version but Canyon version.) Wilson Bros. / Another Night
Steve Wilson and Kelly Wilson got a chance to release this one and only album "Another Night" as Wilson Bros. in 1979. Kyle Lehning, the producer was well-known for his producing works with England Dan Seals & John Ford Corey. Thus, “If The World Ran Out Of Love" written by Wilson Bros. was recorded by England Dan Seals & John Ford Coley and climbed up to the country chart. We, Japanese would prefer “AOR” rather than "Westcoast Music" generally used in Europe for this album mainly because of the following reasons: 1. Steve and Kelly Wilson were born in Michigan and grew up in Arkansas. 2. The main recording sessions of this album was done not in Los Angeles but in Nashville. Steve Lukather was the only one musician from Los Angels, California. (Meanwhile, I would say that this must be one o the best sessions of young Steve Lukather.) Full of very sophisticated melodies with Blue-eyed Soul flavour and perfect harmonies all through the album. You must be pleased that a bonus track was added to the remastered CD in 2018 as men Release: 1979 Label: ATCO Records, USA (SD38-116) First reissue on CD: September 29, 1999, by EastWest, Japan (AMCY-6041) Tracks: 1. White Heart
The most successful CCM band of early 1980’s must be White Heart. Billy Smiley and Dan Huff formed the band in 1982 when they seemed to be heavily influenced by Toto, Boz Scaggs, Journey, and Steely Dan at the time. Whiteheart was pursued by every major Christian label until Chris Christian heard their demo and signed them to Home Sweet Home Records and gave them their first record deal with Myrrh Records. In 1982, their self-titled debut album was released. What If
What If is the superband comprising of Bob Wilson, Larry Williams, two ex-Seawind members and Tommy Funderburk, the voice of Airplay. The story of "What if" should be back in 1981.... After collapse of Seawind, Bob Wilson and Larry Williams met with Tommy Funderburk and started collaboration. Thus, Bob and Tommy completed an album as a special project "The Front", which was CCM album released under Refuge, Christian label in 1984. And then, Bob and Tommy formed the new band "What if" with Larry Williams (Keyboards, Sax), Larry Klein (bass) and Michael Thompson (guitar) and they actually did live performances before signing with RCA. Comparing with "The Front", this album is full of straight-hard-pop-rock music with secular lyrics. And it might be noted that Eric Persing, known for his works with Roby Duke added synthetic sounds to this album. West Coast All Stars / California Dreamin’
A Capella project album must reveal the true vocal skills of the singers and harmonies should be a kind of chemistry. Whilst it does not necessary to have basic tracks production budget, it cannot hide any defects between all vocalists. On quite large number of the sessions, these four guys have been providing us of best harmonies over decades. In 1997, Joey Carbone produced A Capella project album by Bill Champlin, Jason Scheff of CHICAGO then, Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams of then ex TOTO. This album is basically A Capella vocal cover versions of American pops classics such as "California Dreamin'" originally performed by Mamas & Papas. On the track of "Hotel California" originally performed by Eagles, Bobby Kimball's powerful lead vocal and Jason Scheff singing guitar solo note by note were very impressive. In addition to nine pop classic songs, an original new song “Heaven In Your Eyes” is on it. Release Date : 18;July, 1997 Label: Music Garden/Seasons, Japan (XYCF-50004) Tracks: 1. Waters
I believe that you see the name of Waters as the background singers on not a few albums you have in your collection. As written below, Waters is the family (brothers and sisters) group of Luther, Maxine (Willard), Oren and Julia (Tillman). In 1975, they released their own first album "Waters" under Blue Note, the well-known Jazz label. It was 1977 that their 2nd album, i.e. this album was released under Warner Bros. Records. This album is one of mid 70's producing works by Michael Omartian and Steve Barri, other works done by whom are, for example, Dionne Warwick "Love At First Sight"(1977). You can find common names of musicians, the core members of Rhythm Heritage, i.e. Michael Omartian (Key), Jay Graydon (g), Ray Parker Jr. (g), Scott Edwards (b), Jeff Porcaro (ds), Ed Greene (ds) and Victor Feldman (perc). I believe you can enjoy this great Philly Soul Music with Westcoast spices. "If There's A Way" written and full of guitar riff by Jay Graydon is awesome! Release: 1977 Label: Warner Bros.
